November 24, 2007 Notes
Well Thanksgiving was a wonderful occasion. Paul, Lisa, Ben, and Sophie arrived in town Wednesday evening and then later Brus showed up. On Thursday, well before the Thanksgiving feast at 5:30, David and Shanon arrived. We had a great meal. On Friday we played computer games, ate more, and some of us went to the science museum in Ashland, which featured a special exhibit on the science of toys.
On the technology front Barbara's PC seems to be suffering severe hardware problems so Brus got her accounts, contacts, favorites, and saved documents transferred to the Dell XPR, which is now her computer, but I can still play dark age of Camelot on it. This morning we all met for a pancake breakfast and then Paul, Lisa, Ben, and Sophie left for Tigard and Dave and Shanon left for Salt Lake City. In the afternoon we went to a movie, American Gangster, with Brus had dinner at Genkai. Brus is going to get up early tomorrow morning and drive back to Seattle.

A Diamond Jubilee Birthday or A Day in the Life of ...
I was awakened at 8:30 on the morning of my 75th birthday by a call from a college bookstore ordering 17 copies of a book, Collaboration Handbook for Educators Working Toward Inclusion of Special Needs Students, published by Practical Press. I asked the caller to fax the purchase order to me and said I would get the order out the next day. It was then time to make two cups of my special latte by putting 275 ml of water and 10 grams of Folgers simply smooth ground coffee (gentle on your stomach) in to Mr Coffee. When the coffee was done brewing I heated 150 ml of low fat milk in a large mug with the microwave and added the coffee. Result, 500 ml (2 cups) of delicious coffee. Breakfast also included a bowl of cherrios with skim milk and dried fruit topping. I chased down a 1000 mg fish oil capsule and two 81 mg Bayer low does asprin with 150 ml of low sodium V8.
I listened to a podcast of MacTech created 8-7-07 on the iPhone while taking the clean dishes out of the dish washer and putting the breakfast dishes in. Time to go to the bathroom, put in my hearing enhancement device and get dressed for the day before Pam, the interior decorator arrived to discuss some plans with Barbara for a new deck. She also brought a new non-slip pad and rug for the laundry room, which also contains Chobe's sand box. Chobe later investigated the rug, then curled up and fell asleep on it.
I went to work on email assignments from the course I teach on the Internet, Ed 602 Educational Research Methods. There were also some assignments for Ed 602, Statistics for Educational Research, a course I no longer teach but am taking care of assignments for students who were taking the course in the past but never finished. They have until January 10, 2008 to complete the course.
I got an email bithday card from Jeff, Amy, and Max, and a birthday email message from sister Barbara. After my birthday lunch of tenderloin steak, grilled outdoors on the deck, baked potato, and aspargus, I saw that I had a voice mail on the iPhone. It was brother Bill wishing me a happy birthday, so I called him back and we talked about the Burnt Root tour video I had just sent him. I was pleased to hear he liked the introduction I had put on the tape. My iPhone beeped again and I had an email from son John which I responded to. I wanted to ask him if it was OK to give the kids, my grandchildren, iPod Nanos for Christmas. The phone rang and since Barbara was taking a walk, I answered to hear an automated sales message from Talbots.
I have some work to do for Practical Press, get out the order for 17 copies of Collaboration Handbook, the order that came in at 8:30 this morning and I asked them to fax the purchase order order to me, which they did. I also have to take care of seven copies of the same text which were returned to me yesterday. However, Chobe has other plans, she thinks I should stay in the recliner for my COL duties. COL, of course, refers to Cat On Lap. I was able to get the book order ready to be picked up by the Gene, the mail delivery person tomorrow.
I looked at an animated birthday message on the computer from Julie and a Thanksgiving message from Stacey. As dinner time approached Paul called and Ben and Sophia sang happy birthday to me. Brus called to wish me a happy birthday as did my brother Bob. We finished our dinner, had some birthday cake and opened some presents which included two books, The Coldest Winter by David Halberstam and Geary's Guide to the Greatest Aphorists by James Geary, and opened birthday cards from Barbara, Chobe, and sister Barbara.
That is more or less what happened on the day of my 75th birthday.

November 19, 2007 Word 2007 Inspiron
For almost 75 years I have trod this extraordinary planet and perceived its wonders and enjoyed its blessings, perceived through my senses. My vision is aided by corrective eyeglasses although I can do most tasks without them. I am not wearing them right now as a write this journal entry with Microsoft Word 2007 on the Dell Inspiron on my lap sitting in the blue recliner. My companion animal and lap warmer is outside sitting on the deck, waiting to be called in for a little snack. She gave up and came in without being called so she forfeits the getting called in snack.
This afternoon I have an appointment with Elizabeth, the audiologist, to check my adaptation to a hearing enhancement device. It greatly aides my hearing Barbara and understanding movies and the MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour on television. For most other televiewing I use earphones and my computer, without HEDs in place or with the volume level turned down all the way. I have this remote device that can adjust the volume of my hearing enhancement device. It is supposed to be used temporarily to adjust the volume during these getting started days. I am going to ask to keep it so I will have to pay for it. The total cost of my unit will be similar to a well equipped laptop computer, my other prosthetic communication device. My other well used devices are the iPhone and the Zire 71 PDA. I use both of these to keep journal items on, using Notes on the iPhone and Memo on the Zire 71. I also keep journal items on the Dell Inspiron (using Word 2007), the Alienware computer (using Word 2007), or the MacBook Pro (using Pages or Word for Mac). I have set up a blog on blogger.com, called iPhoneJournal, to share these notes with others, although there is no evidence that any one is viewing them.
The cat decided she needed to sit in my lap so I am continuing to write with the Inspiron perched on the left arm rest of the recliner. Its about 20 centimeters wide and thus holds the lap top nicely. I should have Barbara take a picture of me showing this arrangement of items (computer, chair, cat, and human).
In the afternoon I went in to the audiologist for a progress report on how I am adapting to the use of an HED (hearing enhancement device). After putting the device in my ear it was apparent that the right ear device was not functioning. It turns out it was blocked, something I had not considered and was soon restored to usefulness by the audiologitst.
In the evening brother Rud called to wish me a happy birthday, for tomorrow. He also reported that his neighbor would also be 75 tomorrow. How does the old saw go about how many people are needed in a room for two people to have the same birthdate? I don’t believe they had to be the same age though.

This is super Tuesday for Wasson birthdays. Five years ago today, Sopia Elaine Wasson was born. Happy birthday Sophie. Sixty-five years ago today was a Friday and on Friday, Nvember 13, 1942, Loren Annis Wasson was born. Happy birthday Bill. In memorium, we also celebrate our father/grandfather/greatgrandfather's birthday. One hundred years ago today, November 13, 1907, John Rutherford Wasson was born. We all think of you and remember you on your birthday Grandpa Jack.
I am still trying to get the wasson.com web server back on the world wide web but have been unsuccesful, since I dropped our charter cable broadband Internet connection and switched to Eartlink DSL. The DSL service is great, I just have not been able to get wasson.com running. I am hoping Paul will help me get it started at Thanksgiving. However, there is an alternate, I am putting family content on my .mac website. Please go to http://web.mac.com/wassonjb/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html

I should figure out how to set up spaces on Mac OS 10.5 on the MacBook. I did get the Address Book contents transferred from a backup version of OS 10.4 on a FireWire drive, BT3.
Audible.com listed "20 Books That Changed Literature" ( in addition to Homer and William Shakespear they admit, and I might add the Bible KJV).
1. The Time Machine H G Wells *
2. Fear of Flying Erica Jong *
3. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Mark Twain *
4. On the Road: The Original Scroll Jack Kerouac *
5. Bleak House Charles Dickens
6. White Teeth Zadie Smith *
7. Ulysses, Volume 1: Episodes 1-3 James Joyce *
8. The Sun Also Rises Ernest Hemingway *
9. Alive's Adventure in Wonderland Lewis Carroll *
10. The Maltese Falcon Dashiell Hammett
11. A Clockwork Orange Anthony Burgess
12. Animal Farm George Orwell *
13. In Cold Blood Truman Capote *
14. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Hunter S Thompson *
15. Emma Jane Austin
16. Beowulf Robert K Gordon (translated) *
17. Metamorphosis Franz Kafka *
18. The Canterberry Tales Geoffrey Chaucer *
19. The Short Stories of Anton Chekhov, Volume 1 Anton Checkhov
20. Don Quixote Miguel de Cervantes *
* Have already read in print edition
Well I better quit writing and get to reading one of my texts on CourseSmart, or if all else fails, respond to student assignments for Ed 603.

Yesterday brother Bob called to see if it was my birthday. Today I got up at 8:30 and put my hearing enhancement device (HED) in earlier then usual and set it two clicks lower than the default level. I want to test settings for listening to music and podcasts on the iPhone with the earbuds and to use standard earphones with HED on. Went to Barnes and Noble to return a duplicated book and pick up two others by Michael Chabon, The Wonder Boys and The Yiddish Policemen's Union, on the way to Triple A to pick up the Sightseer, which has been winterized. I then went for a 38 minute walk while listening to James Taylor and Leo LaPorte. I then tried to listen to music with standard headphones. There was a squeal from the HED, but when I cranked the HED audio level down to the lowest possible level, the earphones worked quite well.
Tried to get the Gateway computer working by connecting it to one of the Ethernet ports on the airport extreme. Connected the Dell monitor from the XPR and turned on the Gateway computer (Pentium II 300 MHz). The keyboard, monitor, and mouse all worked fine. I got to a screen asking for root password but could get no further. I hope son Paul will help me at Thanksgiving time.

I am sitting in the blue recliner with Chobe ensconsed firmly on my lap. Even with the MacBook perched on its chairside perch, I find it difficult to write with Chobe in place. It works fine for reading, I am currently reading Borge and Gall's Educational Research, An Introduction (7th ed., 2003) and Deitel's Internet & World Wide Web, How to Program (4th ed., 2008) on CourseSmart.
Today would have been cousin Bill Nygard's (Roger Carelton Nygard) 75th birthday were he living. I noted this in the Zire's calendar when I checked the date for this memo. The Zire is still working quite well except that the on/off switch does not work. I turn it on by releasing and putting back in the flash memory card. I turn it off by not using it so that it turns off automatically. While checking the calendar, I also noted an entry that said one week to brother Bill's birthday (he will be 65 years old) and one week to granddaughter Sophia's birthday (she will be 4 years old). I have plenty of time to get a birthday card sent to both of them. Sophia is my youngest grandchild. However, last night I dreamt that David Michael had a baby. The baby's mother was not specified in the dream. Bill and Sophia's birthday is also my father's date of birth. He was born November 13, 1907 and would thus be 100 years old on his birthday this year.
My personal technology all seems to be working well at the moment. I do not have the wassons.com web site up though. I need some help in getting the old Gateway computer working for that task.
